First Aid

The First Aid syllabus comprises information contained in 3 parts:
> Indoor First Aid and Safety
> Outdoor First Aid and Safety
> Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation Workshop

Assessment should comprise these segments:
> Practical
> Written
> Oral

For further information about conditions and treatment, consult the authorised First Aid Manual of the St John Ambulance Association, St Andrew's Ambulance Association and the British Red Cross Society.

Stage 1
Awarded to Boys who have attended regularly a course of instruction and passed both the theory and practical tests in these topics:

1. Indoor
a. Introduction to First Aid and the First Aid Box
> Definition and Aims
> Casualty Assessment
> The First Aid Kit

b. Common Ailments 1
> Fever
> Fainting
> Fits

2. Outdoor
a. Fractures and Immobilisation 1
> Introduction to Basic Anatomy and Physiology
> Function of Bones
> Definition
> Types of Fractures
> Cause of Fractures
> Sign and Symptoms
> Aims of First Aids for Fractures
> Injuries - Upper Limbs, Dislocated Shoulder, Upper Arm, Forearm/Wrist, Elbow, Fingers, Ribcage
> Bandaging - Types of Bandaging and Their Uses, Rules of Bandaging, Improvised Slings

b. Heat Injury
> Sunburn
> Heat Cramps
> Heat Exhaustion
> Heat Stroke
> Prevention

c. Wounds and Bleeding 1
> Introduction to Basic Anatomy and Physiology
> Blood Vessels
> Definition and Types of Wounds
> First Aid Treatment for Wounds
> Bleeding
> Control of Bleeding

3. Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation

Drill

Stage 1
Awarded to Boys who pass these examinations based on the Drill Manual:

1. Written or Oral examination based on the following sections:
a. The purpose and place for Drill in the BB
b. Paying Compliments

2. Practical ability in executing correctly the following drill movements:
a. Attention
b. At Ease
c. Stand Easy
d. Dressing
e. Stationary Turns - right, left, and about turn
f. Stationary Salute
g. Marching and Halting
h. Wheeling Right and Left
i. Mark Time and Halt
j. Falling Out and Dismissal
k. Eyes Right and Left on the March

Stage 2

Community Service

Stage 1
Awarded to Boys who carry out at least 20 hours of community service in one session, and who have also:

1. Attended 2 Community Service Lessons [pre- and post-service]
2. Submitted an individual post-service report, which shows meaningful reflection of the community service experience

Citizenship

The Citizenship syllabus shall be the Total Defence Badge Syllabus as provided by the National Education Office, Ministry of Defence [Singapore].

Stage 1 [Total Defence - Bronze]
Awarded to Boys aged 12 or above who have attended regularly a course of instruction in:

1. Total Defence Badge Lessons
2. Five aspect of Total Defence
3. Relevance and Importance of Total Defence

Christian Education

Stage 1
Awarded to Boys who have sucessfully participated in a minimum of 15 lessons contained in the Brigade's Core CE syllabus and who show a general understanding of the passages or topics of Scripture in the course.

Adventure

The Adventure Award promotes the spirit of adventure and discovery. It combines expedition and camp craft, learnt and practised in an adventure setting. You must hold at least First Aid Stage 1 to undertake instruction in this award.

In the area of kayaking, which requires extensive technical skills, you must first gain at least Kayaking Stage 1 before attempting a kayaking expedition.

Stage 1
Awarded to Boys aged 12 or above, who have successfully undertaken in the first 2 weekends of instruction comprising:

1. Expedition
a. Maps: Care and Maintenance
b. Maps: Scales and Map References
c. Maps: Features - Natural, Cultural and Topographical
d. Using a Map and a Compass
e. Keeping an Expedition Log
f. Exercise Gallop: Orienteering

2. Camp Craft
a. Important knots and lashings
b. Tents: Parts, Care and maintenance, Pitching
c. Building an improvised shelter and Site considerations for shelter
d. The Country Code
e. Exercise Afloat: Raft-building

3. First Aid
a. Refresher on Basic Outdoor and Water First Aid and Safety

4. Assessment to be done in the third weekend
a. Theory Test
b. Practical assessment during a hike of around 16km, and a subsequent overnight stay under improvised shelter.

Target Badge

To gain it, you must attend 2 induction parades. While there is no writtern test, assignments and worksheets must be completed correctly. The contents on BB knowledge must cover:

4. History and Tradition of your Company
5. Uniform - Wearing and Cleaning
6. Introduction to Awards Scheme
7. Overview of BB International
8. BB Songs - The Anchor Song, Mighty Band of Brothers, Boyhood Days, Welcome to "BB Show", The BB - First for Boys
9. BB Vesper and Table Grace

Boys working on the Target Badge are expected to undertake a suitable outdoor activity during the course. They are not to take other awards classes during this training.
